Save Swifties

Our last chance to save the Swift Parrot from extinction

Critically endangered Swift Parrots have lost half of their only breeding habitat on Earth, with native forest logging the primary force behind this destruction.

Governments know the science, yet logging continues. Together, we can protect every remaining tree and give the Swifties a future.

Key findings of our new report

Our new report ‘Swift Parrots at risk: Forestry Tasmania’s constant assault’ exposes relentless logging in the Swift Parrot’s only breeding habitat, and calls for urgent protection now.
Logging is the greatest threat to the survival of the critically endangered Swift Parrot
50% of breeding habitat destroyed and logging is the number one driver of this loss
41% of all Swift Parrot records in Tasmania’s forests open to logging in 2024/25 were contributed from our science surveys.
8,000 + hectares of known Swift Parrot nursery forests continue to be logged by Forestry Tasmania

Across the critically endangered parrots breeding habitat, there are many forests threatened by logging when they need to be in secure conservation reserves now.

Swift Parrot habitat under threat

This interactive map shows the Swift Parrot Important Breeding Areas (SPIBAs) overlaid with active and planned native forest logging coupes.

39,417 hectares targeted for logging by Forestry Tasmania in the next 3 years (2025-28)
157 forests on the logging schedule are home to 49 threatened species including the Swift Parrot
8,000 hectares of these forests are critical nurseries for the critically endangered Swift Parrot

The only way to protect the Swift Parrot, and hundreds of other threatened Australian forest species, is to end native forest logging across Australia and Tasmania.
